Teenagers in Oxford, Ohio and greater vicinity will be given the opportunity to create their own Superhero alter ego at the Oxford Community Arts Center's (OCAC) inaugural STORYTELLERS IN ACTION CAMP. The camp, titled "THE COMICAL ADVENTURES OF A TEENAGE SUPERHERO," will take place Monday, August 12th - Friday, August 16th at the OCAC from 9:00am - 3:00pm. Camp fee is $150 which covers instruction and all materials. Scholarships may be available. Students age 12-18 are welcome to register. This camp will accept a maximum of 15 participants.
This new camp experience at the Oxford Community Arts Center was created by OCAC Program Coordinator, Andrew Lynn. STORYTELLERS IN ACTION is a multidisciplinary camp and will cover three main areas of engagement to build into this year theme: superheroes & comic books. The three categories are Creative Writing, Illustration, and Theater. Each area will be taught by a different lead instructor. Instructors are either current students at Miami University or recent graduates. The camp experience will also include visits from guest artists.
Students will create a character and tell their story across a multiplicity of styles. Their characters will cross over from comic book-style writing to a scripted performance. They will illustrate their character on paper and then become a live, costumed representation of that character themselves. Superheroes' histories, actions and reactions will be developed through theater exploration techniques. Superheroes will be combined - by camp instructors - into groups. Each group will be given a villain to use in their script plots. The scripted performances will be combined with multi-media representations of the students work and performed Friday, August 16th at 6:30pm. This performance will be FREE and open to the public. $150 - $0
